Windows Shell Experience Host and Why Is It Using High Memory?

Windows Shell Experience Host is also included in the Microsoft Windows Operating systems. The main job of Windows Shell Experience Host is to display the universal apps in the interface.

1. Disable the option “Automatically pick an accent color from my background”

The main work you should do, whenever you use slideshow desktop backgrounds, then turning off automated accent colors. At any time the system background changes, the system will get a new accent color for use. At that time our system is slow because the Windows Shell Experience Host (ShellExperienceHost.exe) process can handle all the changes of colors. Below we see how to disable automated accent colors.

  • Choose the Windows image in our taskbar then it will open the start menu, now you select Settings. You also use the Windows+I  shortcut key of the keyboard.
  • Select the Personalization option
  • Select Colors from the Menu
  • Search the options till you find the “Choose your accent color” section. Now you check whether the check box before the “Automatically choose an accent color from my background” is empty.
  • Now you stop the settings app and wait several minutes to test if the CPU usage again increased or not. So, the Windows Shell Experience Host uses less memory space, then we have solved the problem.

2. Stop the Slide Show Backgrounds

After stopping the automatic accent colors also cannot solve the issue, the next step to stop the slideshow backgrounds. If the background of the system change to a picture, the Windows Shell Experience Host process does several visual changes that occupy a so much amount of memory. Below are how to stop slideshow backgrounds in the windows 10 operating system.

  1. Choose the Windows image in our taskbar then it will open the start menu, now you select Settings. You also use the Windows+I  shortcut key of the keyboard.
  2. Select the Personalization option.
  3. Now select the option background menu
  4. In the background menu select the “picture” or “solid color”. These options are not dynamic, which means if any changes happen that will not affect the Windows Shell Experience Host.
  5. Then you stop the settings app and see for some minutes if the CPU usage increases again or not. So, Windows Shell Experience Host contains a small amount of memory, then we have solved the problem.

3. Execute the System File Checker

The System File Checker is also called an SFC scan. This can be used to solve problems, it uses the Command Prompt to see more about your system. To use this we use one easy command. Below we see how to use the System File Checker to solve the issue.

  1. Type the Windows + R on the keyboard, then it will open the Run tool.Then you type “cmd” and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter.Now it opens the command prompt that contains all the permissions administrators have.
  2. Use the command SFC/scannow and now press the enter.
  3. Now you wait for the System File Checker to scan the system. System File Checker finds any problems we can solve those problems using the SFC command, it will also solve the problems that correspond to Windows Shell Experience Host.

4. Reduce the CPU usage of Shell Experience Host.exe

The option is given by Task Manager to reduce the CPU usage of processes. We can use that option and apply it on the Windows Shell Experience Host (Shell ExperienceHost.exe) process and we avoid a lot of CPU usage by processes. Below are the steps how to reduce the CPU usage

  1.  We press right-click on the taskbar that will open the Task Manager.
  2. Now we choose the Details tab.
  3. Find the Shell Experience Host.exe process. Press right-click on the processes and select Set Affinity.
  4. You will set your processor affinity, and press ok.
  5. Now you stop the settings app and wait several minutes to test if the CPU usage again increased or not. So, the Windows Shell Experience Host uses less memory space, then we have solved the problem.

5. Replace the old version with the new version of Windows 10

If the above options do not solve the problem then suggest using the latest version of Windows 10. By using the latest version of windows 10 we solve the problems like Windows Shell Experience Host take much amount of memory. Below are the steps to update the latest version.

  1. Click on the Start menu and then choose the settings application or type Windows + I on the keyboard.
  2. Press the Update & Security.
  3. Press on Check for updates in Windows Update
  4. We see any update is available, then you press the Install button.
  5. Check after a system update, if the Windows Shell Experience Host remains the problem with CPU usage or not.
